The Lorenzo Rodriguez DJ Scholarship
This scholarship was established in memory of Lorenzo Rodriguez to secure adequate scholarships to
aspiring DJ’s to attend the Scratch DJ Academy and to educate on the importance of fighting and raising
awareness of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). In the 33 years that Lorenzo was with us, he left an
everlasting memory with all that he touched. He was talented, a loving son, a loyal friend and a great DJ.
It is in this spirit that the Lorenzo Rodriguez DJ Scholarship was created.
Lorenzo Rodriguez
Lorenzo worked as the Lobby Concierge at the South Beach Marriott and was a proud member of the South
Florida Concierge Association. There wasn't any place or event he couldn't get you into, he was the epitome
of a concierge. He loved the arts with an intense passion for House music and the DJ culture. He was
always excited and ready for the annual Winter Music Conference held in Miami Beach. Those few days in
March were the highlight of his year. It was what he lived for, he was in his element and it was ALL about
the music.
He was a loving son who looked after and took care of his mother. Lorenzo was a very happy person and
enjoyed life. He didn't let much get him down. He made people feel as if they were old friends even if they
were strangers meeting for the first time.
Our friend, brother and son passed away suddenly on the morning of October 26, 2009 from concentric
cardiac hypertrophy. Cardiac hypertrophy is an abnormal enlargement of the heart muscle, often
associated with increased afterload. It frequently accompanies long-standing hypertension and congestive
heart failure. Concentric hypertrophy is a hypertrophic growth of a hollow organ without overall enlargement,
in which the walls of the organ are thickened and its capacity or volume is diminished.
The Rodriguez family would like to thank you for your tax deductible donation to the Lorenzo Rodriguez
Memorial. Your gift will not only pay tribute to Lorenzo’s outstanding character, it will allow his legacy to live
on. It will allow another talented, strong person with drive and perseverance a chance to accomplish his/her
DJing goals and dreams and also to educate on the importance of fighting and raising awareness of
cardiovascular diseases (CVD).
Ways to donate:
Donations to the American Heart Association, in honor of Lorenzo, can be made at The Lorenzo Rodriguez

American Heart Association
The American Heart Association is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is: "Building healthier
lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke."
The mission statement was updated by the American Heart Association during its Annual Meeting in April
2007. The mission statement undergoes a formal review process every third year. The association's
impact goal is to reduce coronary heart disease, stroke and risk by 25 percent by 2010.
Scratch DJ Academy
Scratch DJ Academy was founded in 2002 by Jam Master Jay, the legendary DJ from Run-DMC, with one
goal: to provide unparalleled education and access to the art form of the DJ and producer. Headquartered
in New York City, but with locations in Miami and Los Angeles, Scratch has taught hundreds of thousands of
students from all 50 states and from over 30 countries.
Scratch DJ Academy’s mission is simple: education and access. Scratch educates beginner, amateur and
established DJ’s and producers via celebrity instructors, copyrighted curriculum and the proper equipment
on which to learn. Scratch aims to legitimize, validate and extend the role and importance of the DJ and
producer into new arenas by highlighting and showcasing the art forms intrinsic value and then
constructively disseminating it to the public. www.scratch.com
